The Works Art & Design Festival 2006

June 23 - July 5, 2006

Sweet Immortality
Douglas Clark
Curator: Michael Mitchell

For three decades, Clark was Canada’s playful photographer – always bouncing off the walls, exclaiming and bringing life to everything he touched. Sometimes he was a taker of photographs--as seen in his playfully abstract panoramas of Asia and Europe. Sometimes he was a maker of photographs--using razors, tape and foil to meld multiple negatives into a single oddly joyful image. But always, Clark’s photography captured a world that was sensual, delicious, colourful, weird and breath-takingly beautiful.

Graver La Lumiere, Etched by Light
Translator: Jon Goodman
Curated by The Whyte Museum of The Canadian Rockies

Classic, historical photographs by legends like William Henry Fox Talbot, Walker Evans, Dorothea Lange, Edward Steichen, Paul Strand, Bernice Abbott, and Alfred Stieglitz are translated into photogravures by Jon Goodman.

Past Lives
Ric Kokotovich

Life and afterlife. Permanence and transience. These graceful photo-portraits of shriveled plants and flowers resurrect the life that has past and cast their journey from bud to bloom in a new heroic light. Calgary-based Kokotovich has been an artist and filmmaker for over 20 years; his Water Lilies exhibit at last year’s Festival was not only a critical success, but also an audience favourite.
