Artist Statement

My works are two pieces that complement each other, each capturing distinct and yet interconnected aspects of Edmonton's rich heritage and vibrant community.

The piece titled Generations, 2022, focuses on the layers of history and diverse communities that have shaped Edmonton. It depicts the generations of First Nations, settlers, and immigrant communities that have made Edmonton their homes. The painting is a tapestry of bright, vivid colors, multiple faces and eyes that represent generations of people who have lived on this land before our existence and arrival. Each colour stands for different eras and cultures: deep reds and earth tones symbolize the enduring presence and strength of the First Nations, lush greens and blues convey the growth and resilience of settler communities, while vibrant yellows and oranges celebrate the energy and contributions of immigrant populations. The interplay of these colors creates a dynamic and harmonious composition, reflecting the rich and multifaceted history of Edmonton.

The piece, titled Land and People, 2024, celebrates the multicultural landscape of Edmonton. This work is a joyful explosion of color, with each shade and tone representing the landscape and diversity of culture for everyone who calls Edmonton home. Brilliant blues and greens depict the natural beauty of the land, while bright pinks, purples, and oranges represent the vibrant cultural expressions of the people. The painting radiates warmth and unity, with bold, sweeping lines that convey a sense of movement and celebration. This piece is a visual symphony that illustrates the harmony and diversity within the city, highlighting the beautiful mosaic of cultures that together form the essence of Edmonton.

Together, both works offer a powerful visual narrative of Edmonton's past and present on a palette of bright, beautiful colors to honor its history and celebrate its multicultural identity.
