Treaty 6

Alley of Light: Exhibit 8

Winter 2021 featured images from the painting series Treaty 6, by Metís artist Rebecca Pickard.

We encourage you to interconnect with images inspired by the beauty of our Boreal Forest.

About the Images

“These colourful works are inspired by the land and the faithful cycles of the natural world.  My Métis ancestors are from the Lac la Biche area , a place rich in lakes and wetlands, cradled by the magical northern Boreal Forest.  As a child I spent much of my time quietly observing nature.  Living off grid with my family for a time allowed me to spend a lot of unstructured, free time in the bush.  This instilled an understanding that everything in nature both gives and receives - this spirit of reciprocity is something I try to communicate in my paintings.”

- Rebecca Pickard, Exhibiting Artist

About the Exhibit

“Treaty 6 is located in the Boreal Forests of Alberta, and is the traditional meeting grounds, gathering place, and travelling route for the Cree, Saulteaux, Blackfoot, Métis, Dene and Nakota Sioux. The spirit and intention of the First Nations, Métis, and Inuit people of this land are interconnected with nature, as are these paintings.”
