Artist Statement
Some develop such a need to capture elegant forms in clay that it becomes a metabolic requirement.
The somatic feeling of clay upon fingertips and under nails, clenching and pinching, ripping and squishing from an early age has a history of pleasure and positive reactions. To have such a long relationship with clay and for it to be such a routine dimension to life makes it hard to go long before the next studio encounter.
Anything that can be conceptualized can be rendered at any split second. Any spontaneous adjustment to the clay conceived as a fleeting idea in the brain bio-electrically travels near to the speed of light, resulting in a flick of a finger or a hand gesture to affect the sculpted form.
The forms are a joy to perceive. Every creature and formation are subconsciously, and sometimes intentionally, analyzed. Every hue, texture, pattern is a celebration of adventurous discovery. Sometimes beauty is taken in by the eye and immediately rendered. Other times it can be memorized and built years later. Forms can be synthesized with other forms, memories, and concepts within the phenomenon of the creative process.
