Women’s Medicine

March 2022 - March 2023

In celebration of International Women’s Day, 2022, the Alley of Light featured Women’s Medicine, a body of work by Lana Whiskeyjack.

We celebrated the images inspired by the beauty of grandmothers, mothers, sisters, daughters, and two-spirited loved ones.

About the Images

“nohkom (my grandmother) used to say that we women, "carry the most powerful medicine". What nohkom means by medicine is the wombs of our mothers, grandmothers, great grandmother, sisters and aunties. Wombs may bring life, nurture life, carry trauma, transform trauma, heal, create, and so much more. But colonization, oppression, misogyny, and environmental pollution had great impacts on wombs. My paintings are the reflection of honouring and celebrating our diverse women's medicine.”

About the Exhibit

“Women make up half the world population. It’s time to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of feminine energies, as we do masculine ones.  When light, kindness, and compassion are as respected as darkness, animosity and tyranny, then the world, having a better sense of balance, may find a better sense of dignity, and peace.”
